I went to Big Day Out last year in Sydney and watched an “Aussie Bloke” who bore a remarkable resemblance to Russell Crowe in Romper Stomper days who walked up to people waiting in a line and asked each one to kiss the Aussie flag he was wearing as a cape. When someone he asked declined the offer the “Aussie Bloke” in question king hit the poor bloke waiting in the line and an ambulance had to be called. I think that’s what Ken West was trying to avoid.

The notion that he could stop people behaving like boorish morons by asking politely was of course misguided.

Personally I think you should be able to do whatever you like with the Aussie Flag as long as you own the one you do it to. Buy a flag and burn it and I couldn’t care less. Burn my flag and I’ll have you arrested for property damage. These kinds of actions (burning the flag etc) only have the power to offend if you let them. I think we humans need to get over ourselves a bit.

I don’t actually believe in giving so much power to flimsy bits of fabric. Especially not flimsy bits of fabric with the Union Jack in the corner
