We might disagree about other things Steven but I agree with you 100% about the Christmas card thing. Either keep in touch in a meaningful way or don’t bother (although you put it far more eloquently). I don’t send Christmas cards. I catch up with those people I can and ring my friends and family who are overseas to have an actual conversation.

re Toilets. Here in France, it is not uncommon in some cafés to have to pay to unlock the door to the (usually only) stall. So the only opportunity to be kind or rude would be upon leaving the stall. And there, I think it would be kind to let the person waiting in for free. It would also be kind for the person waiting to give a small coin to the person graciously saving him the cost of the toilet.
